A short guide to towns around Brighton

By David Spook

Brighton is the most popular place to stay on the South East coast of England, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of this busy city with its numerous attractions but there is a great deal of interesting locations just a short journey away.

Lewes

Lewes is a must if you are staying in Brighton for more than a few days as it is just a few minutes by train from the city. It is overshadowed by its gregarious cousin but actually has far more history.

Nestled in a break in the downs on the river Ouse (pronounced ooze), Lewes is a picturesque town, with a castle, city walls, ancient ruins and Harveys, my favourite brewery in all England (so make that the world)!

There is plenty to entertain, and shopping is great especially if you want to find something unusual and old, the antique and junk shops are always worth a rummage.

Like all the locations I'm listing, there is great walking to be had nearby, I would recommend a walk up Mount Caburn if you have the time (2 hours should do), the views at the top are truly spectacular.

You mustn't miss a traditional pint of Harveys in one of Lewes numerous pubs, there are an awful lot to choose from!

Shoreham

Shoreham is part of Brighton's main port, but beyond the ships unloading huge piles of gavel there is a charming town, a beach (far quieter than that in Brighton but still stony) and a great starting point for some county walking.

Steyning

If you want a quiet typically English 'ye olde worlde' village to visit, Steyning would make a great choice! The high street is full of ancient timber framed houses and there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and shopping for a pleasant day out. It is also worth a visit to nearby the Castle in nearby Bramber which may have had more than a few knocks in its time but has spectacular views over the south downs and out to sea.

If you fancy a good walk, the river Adur passes by the castle and snakes slowly towards Shorham, providing a easy ramble which takes in a some very ancient churches, most containing rare pre-reformation murals that seems to have escaped destruction. More taxing walking takes you up into the unspoilt countryside of the South Downs where you can see as far as Porstmouth and the Isle of Wight on a good day.

Wothing

Worthing is Brighton's nearest sea side rival, also offering seaside holidays complete with a beach, pier hotels, restaurants and bars. A far more genteel town in many ways but far from sleepy. It is also considerably cheaper than Brighton which is about 20 minutes away by a fast frequent rail service.

Lindfield

Inland and a bit further afield than the other locations, is Lindfield which is a most interesting village ajoining the unremarkable town of Hawards Heath which again is 20 minutes on the train from Brighton.

What makes Lindfield so interesting is the range of houses that crowd along the High Street, from the Medieval hunting lodge of an king, to small Georgian cottages, it seems that every architectural period has made its presence known. There is plenty of walking to be had and of course great old pubs to provide refreshments!

So I hope when you go and visit Brighton, you will also enjoy the amazingly beautiful area that surrounds the town. Have a good vacation!
