When commissioning a company website

By David Spook

When commissioning a website for your company there's a few things to consider that will considerably smooth the process:

Hire the right people

Don't buy cheap! Seriously, one of the main problems is that a site build goes to the lowest bidder. There are a raft of bad sites out there that have been constructed for $1,000 or so, this is not enough to get the due care and attention that a site deserves.

You are the expert in your domain but the designer is the expert at design.

You must keep in mind that you are combining your knowledge of your business with the designers knowledge of websites. You may think you know a lot about the web (after all you use it all the time right?) but the designer spends all day thinking about usability, flow, goal attainment and many other things that may have not even registered as important. Listen carefully to what the designer says, if you don't agree with a sticking point try running it by somebody who is not directly involved in your build.

The designer needs to think about your business, make sure that they stay focused on that. Make sure they understand your audience, it is too easy to be working from two different standpoints, you need to work closely.

Think from your customer's point of view not your own

Remember your website is not for you to use, it is for your potential customers. Things that may be important to you may not be so important to a customer, for example:

- Clear navigation: They want to find information fast. They want to find the correct page fast. They want to buy the product fast. Make sure they can!

- Minimal intervention: Flashy intros, big graphics etc. may look good to you, but everything you put in the way of somebody getting to that 'buy' or 'contact' button is a potential lost customer.

- Corporate information is not that important: You may think that pictures of the sales team, company history, video tour of the canteen are important, you will find that unless you are Google, very few people will want to know. Add this if you want, but don't clutter up you main navigation!

I hope that this info is of good use, good luck with your build!
